Technique Classics Series Hal Leonard Student Piano Library
Series: Educational Piano Library
Publisher: G SCHIRMER, INC
Medium: Book
The 29 etudes in this book are taken from Carl Czerny's The Little Pianist, Opus 823. These engaging etudes are comparable to their famous “older brothers,” the studies found in The Art of Finger Dexterity, but are written for students at an earlier stage of study. They encompass a wealth of technical and music instruction from this master teacher of the Classical period, indeed, the world's first great piano pedagogue. The etudes focus on developing both technical and music skills, providing an excellent stylistic and technical resource for the intermediate pianist. Preceding each etude or group of etudes is a worksheet divided into three sections: Practice Tips, Quick Quiz and Creative Corner. These worksheets help students focus on the important technical features in each etude, apply practical music theory to their study of the music, and vary the etudes in creative ways. Czerny – Selections from The Little Pianist, Opus 823 is available in book/CD format (00296363) or as a book alone (00296364). A separate General MIDI accompaniment disk is also available (00296365). CD and GM accompaniments were created by Phillip Keveren.

From the very first lessons in Book 1, students are making music as they explore the piano keyboard through fun improvisation pieces called My Own Song. The beginning of the book introduces finger numbers, the black-key and white-key groups, and basic rhythm patterns.

Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (stop, skip, and repeat). Once the students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides Bass F and Treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions. This package includes a Piano Lessons Book and CD featuring wonderful tracks to accompany the student during practice or performance.

Also in Unit 3, sharps are introduced in a diatonic setting starting on D, and flats are introduced as blues notes. Most pieces in the second half of Book 2 coordinate hands playing together. This book works very well for transfer students.
