Organ Sonata No. 1 - book

Renowned British composer Colin Mawby has composed this major work in three movements for solo organ. The first movement, a theme, variations, and fantasy, is introduced with an active pedal line outlining several tritons and including some octave playing. The main theme highlights several chromatic intervals in a distinctive rhythmic pattern. Four additional variations further explore this theme, culminating in a lengthy, final variation which moves from a slow rubato section, through a majestic fanfare, to a fast and furious fantasy. The second movement, titled "Elegy," sets a chromatic melody for solo flute against celestes, and again includes some serious chromatic pedal work. The final movement, "Finale," showcases the Tuba (or another reed stop). Frequent shifts between 4/4 time and 5/8 drive the piece forward to the grand ending. For advanced organists.

Suite for Organ

Suite for Organ was commissioned by Enfield and District Organists' Association and first performed by Andrew Parnell in Barnet Parish Church on Saturday, 17 March 2001. Although it was always intended that the Suite should be played complete as a recital piece, it was also hoped that the movements might be used individually as teaching material for organ students, and so the difficulty of each movement is designed to be roughly equivalent to one of the grade examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, levels 4 through 8.
