This collection of 13 classic old-time instrumentals was transcribed for the mandolin from the Gourd Music recording In the Pines. All tunes are written as played by the mandolinists on the original recording - Mike Marshall and John Reischman. In some cases, solos for other instruments have been adapted for the mandolin to offer either basic versions of the melodies or additional variations. Written in standard notation and tablature, the play list is: Rye Straw; Train on the Island; Bury Me Not on the Lone Prarie; Liza Jane; Midnight on the Stormy Deep; Sugar in the Gourd; Down in the Valley to Pray; In the Pines; Spotted Pony; I Truly Understand; Whistlin Rufus; In the Willow Garden; and Sally Ann. The arrangements in this book are based on the sixteen tunes found on the recording Southern Mountain Classics and are designed to be used with the recording. Although these arrangements are not exact transcriptions from the CD, all of the tunes on the recording are included in the book. For each tune there is a song history and a page with the chord structure to help you follow the chords. Each piece is written out in notation and tablature in three versions - beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
